New quality criteria for farm animals are being talked about in all fields of animal production (genetics, nutrition, breeding) and production systems: robustness, hardiness, sturdiness, elasticity, flexibility, plasticity. The meanings of these words and the way they are used are variable and depend on the application domain and on the corresponding points of view. The FAO recently published a report (Livestock’s Long Shadow) that presents livestock farming as a major cause for present and future environmental problems. This report created quite a stir and was widely taken up by the media. The AFZ thought relevant to organise a conference on the issues discussed in this report and on its conclusions and recommendations, that are of concern to all animal production specialists and agronomists.
